Early Life and Education

Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971, in Lansing, Michigan. Her parents divorced when she was 10 years old, and she subsequently lived with her mother and siblings in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Whitmer graduated Magna Cum Laude from Michigan State University's law school.

Political Career

Whitmer began her political career as a Democratic member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006. She then served in the Michigan State Senate from 2006 to 2015, where she became Minority Leader.
