Middelbare scholen: A Secondary Education Overview in Flanders

What is Middelbare School?

Middelbare school, or secondary education, in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium, is mandatory for all students between the ages of 12 and 18. It is divided into two cycles: the first cycle (12-15 years old) and the second cycle (15-18 years old).

In the first cycle, students follow a general curriculum that includes core subjects such as Dutch, French, English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Geography.

In the second cycle, students specialize in a particular field of study, such as:

  • General studies
  • Technology
  • Vocational studies
  • Art

Types of Middelbare Scholen

There are three main types of middelbare scholen in Flanders:

  1. General Secondary Education (ASO): ASO schools offer a broad academic curriculum that prepares students for higher education.
  2. Technical Secondary Education (TSO): TSO schools provide a more specialized education in technical fields, such as engineering, mechanics, and computer science.
  3. Vocational Secondary Education (BSO): BSO schools offer vocational training in a specific trade or profession, such as hairdressing, catering, or construction.

Choosing a Middelbare School

When choosing a middelbare school, it is important to consider the following factors:

  • The type of education you want to pursue
  • The school's location and size
  • The school's reputation and academic record
  • The school's extracurricular activities and facilities

Applying to Middelbare School

Admissions to middelbare scholen are based on students' academic performance in primary school and a central entrance exam. Students can apply to multiple schools, but they are only guaranteed a place at one school.

The application process typically begins in January or February of the year before students enter middelbare school. Decisions are usually made by the end of April or May.
