Howard Carter

Who was Howard Carter?

Historical archaeologist and Egyptologist

Renowned for discovering King Tutankhamun’s tomb

Howard Carter was born in Kensington, London, on 9 May 1874. His early interest in archaeology led him to start working as a draughtsman for the Egypt Exploration Fund in 1891. A talented artist, Carter's drawings of ancient Egyptian tombs and artifacts were highly valued by the Fund. In 1899, he was appointed Inspector-General of Antiquities for Upper Egypt, a post that he held for the next 15 years.

In 1917, Carter began excavating the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. It took him several years to uncover the tomb, and it was not until 1922 that he finally discovered the burial chamber. Inside the chamber, Carter found a wealth of treasures, including a gold funerary mask, a solid gold coffin, and a number of other artifacts. The discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb was one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, and Carter became a world-renowned Egyptologist.
