Jersey Sees Surge in Nests, Expert Explains Reasons

A record number of Asian hornet nests have been discovered in Jersey this year, surpassing previous records. According to the Jersey Asian Hornet Group, 476 queens and 102 nests have been found so far in 2023, significantly more than the same period last year.

An expert on Asian hornets, Alastair Christie, Senior Scientific Officer for Invasive Species, has attributed the large number of nests in Jersey and the Channel Islands to several factors. The islands' favorable climate and habitat diversity provide ideal conditions for the hornets' survival.

A map has been published showing the location of the 160 Asian hornet nests found in Jersey so far this year. Volunteer groups have been working tirelessly to locate and eliminate nests, but the influx in numbers poses a significant challenge.
