Right-Wing Parties Gain Ground in European Parliament Elections

Projections from the recently concluded European Parliament elections indicate a surge in support for right-wing parties.

The number of seats held by right-wing groups in the Parliament is expected to increase from 705 in 2020 to 720 in the upcoming 2024 election.

This development is attributed to several factors, including the rise of populist and anti-immigration sentiments across Europe. Notably, the party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the longest-serving far-right leader in the EU, is projected to make significant gains.

The European Parliament is responsible for passing EU legislation, approving budgets, and holding the European Commission accountable. The composition of the Parliament, therefore, has a substantial impact on European policymaking.

The European Parliament elections are held every five years, and the results are closely watched by political analysts and policymakers alike. The upcoming elections are expected to be highly competitive, with several major parties vying for control of the Parliament.
